Its 4:30 a.m. freezing cold as I try to dress in the dark. This place is called Panguitch, but it feels like Antarctica.  I am in Utah after my favorite game, mule deer. Hunting in Utah is always an adventure. The weather called for partly cloudy but it looks like partly blizzard.  Richard, our guide, assures me that this weather will keep that 4 x 5 monster we have been scouting down lower even closer to camp.  Just thinking of that easily 30-inch spread and those tall symmetrical tines is all the antifreeze I need to get moving.

We leave the horses on the downwind side of what I call “cardiac ridge” and start crawling up to the top to get in position.  We have seen this big buck for the last three days in this same spot and at the same time.  After I catch my breath and slowly adjust the shooting sticks we start to see movement in the tree line.  I count three just before I see that now familiar white face and heart stopping rack of antlers break through the brush.  If he will just turn a little bit more to the side for me…. Richard is tapping my back with the “That’s your shot” signal but I am distracted by something moving behind the buck. I catch a flash of horn that dwarfs what I have in my crosshairs. Could it be an even bigger buck moved down by the storm?
